108 Humility in Consolation, Trust in Desolation

St. Ignatius of Loyola's Rules for the Discernment of Spirits - talk #8 by Ellen Hogarty

“Let him who is consoled see to humbling himself and lowering himself as much as he can, thinking how little he is able for in the time of desolation without such grace or consolation. On the contrary, let him who is in desolation think that he can do much with the grace sufficient to resist all his enemies, taking strength in his Creator and Lord.”

St. Ignatius of Loyola, Spiritual Exercises #324

Rule #11 - St. Ignatius counsels us to have humility in times of consolation and to be trusting during times of desolation.

Scriptures:

  • Proverbs 16:18

  • Matthew 16:15-17

  • Matthew 26:33

  • Philippians 4:12-13

[This is a reposting of the talks I gave on St. Ignatius of Loyola’s rules for the discernment of spirits, drawing on Fr. Timothy Gallagher's material and the actual rules from the Spiritual Exercises. We edited out the Spanish translation from these teachings, so it might sound clipped, or you may sometimes hear the translator’s voice overlapping.]
