Fr. Jack Vessels told a story once of a building that was attacked and on fire. There were many people on top of the building amidst flames and debris. A doctor wanted to go down and help those in need. He was advised not to go into the danger and mess; however, he knew he had to go. The doctor was let down by a helicopter. He was lowered down into the mess with his black bag and began to assist the injured.
As Fr. Jack continued to talk, he shared how Jesus also came down into the mayhem of our sins, hurts, and pain. He knew he had to come and wanted to come to save us from all our sins and entanglement.
I never forgot that story and I still think about it.
I was recently thinking about how Jesus, from the beginning, came as an infant into a stable with animals and manure. Right?! If there were animals, then there was animal poop, smell, and all. Nothing sterile about his birth. He even slept in an animal feeder.
Jesus was born into the poop, but that's why he came. He came down into the mess to help clean it up. His life on earth consisted of healing the sick, forgiving sin, expelling demons, feeding the multitudes, teaching us, and showing who God was. He ended his life being tortured for our sins and dying on the cross. But He is not dead. He rose from the dead and lives forever. He is alive and wants to help us.
Come to me all you who are weary and find life burdensome and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28
It's so simple. All we have to do is go to Jesus, with all our disorders and concerns, and talk to him in our words. He came to help us with all the clutter we find ourselves in. That's why he came. Nothing is too big for Jesus.
Go to Jesus, the Savior. He is in the saving business. He waits for us any day, any time, free of charge. Oh, How he loves us.
Happy New Year!
